Herpes and Cold Sores

Herpes and Cold Sores

Herpes does not have to be the disaster that people feel it is when they realise that they have it. Many people carry one form or other of the virus (as people do with things like chicken pox) and while it is not pleasant, it can be treated.nnThere are two types of Herpes (simplex) virus. Type 1 (HSV-1) which is oral herpes, often known as coldsores or face herpes, which can also occur on fingers and elsewhere on the upper body, and Type 2 (HSV-2) which is genital herpes. Type 1 can cause Type 2 but generally not. Pregnant women should consult their doctor if they have genital herpes as it can be passed to a baby during childbirth.nnOther variations include herpes Zoster or shingles which is caused by the herpes-varicella-zoster virus which also causes chicken pox. This is discussed under 'Skin Conditions' on this website.

In fact most people carry herpes, many without showing any symptoms at all. For others it's a case of managing the virus so that outbreaks are kept to a minimum - and the good news is that there are treatments. However, many of these concentrate on dealing with an outbreak once it has happened. There are some approaches that deal with the causes of an outbreak and some of these have proven highly effective and we have selected a small number and recommend that you look at some of these options.
